TopTenREVIEWS - Silver Award - Awarded for excellence in design, usability and feature set

Offering consistency, accuracy and quality, we have awarded the Spypoint IR-7 game camera our TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award for game cameras. This game camera operates with infrared sensors. When it detects motion, it can capture one to four pictures of your target area. The camera produces great images, has one of the fastest trigger times available and offers an excellent battery life. It is a great option for hunters because the detection sensitivity will reach up to 50 feet, providing a significant amount of information on an area and its animal activity. This camera leaves little to desire and is one of the best game cameras available today.

This game camera is designed with passive infrared sensors that detect objects and movement within the camera's field and range. The camera picked up on all of the objects, people and animals that we used while testing it. If they were moving, the subjects were close to the middle of the frame each time the photos were captured. The trigger speed is relatively quick, so unless an animal is moving very quickly and directly in front of the camera, the camera will be able to capture a picture of it.

On the camera you will find setting controls for the Mode, Delay and the Multi-shot and Video Length functions. Each control is labeled and easy to understand, which makes for simple usage. The Mode control is labeled for four different settings: Photo, Video, Set/test and View. The Delay control allows you to select one-minute, three-minute, five-minute or 15-minute delays during motion.

The Multi-shot/Video Length switch is clearly labeled for both photos and videos. When you are taking photos, you can select M1, M2, M3 or M4 – providing you with up to four shots taken consecutively after movement is detected. The video lengths are clearly labeled: 10, 30, 60 and 90 seconds. There are also three buttons at the bottom of the camera labeled Down, Menu/OK, and Up. These provide clear navigation and allow you to use the screen for setting the date and time, to erase a photo or to format a memory card. We couldn't be more pleased with the ease that we felt as first-time users of the Spypoint IR-6, and in the smooth transition, we felt comfortable changing settings and utilizing different functions.

We are very impressed with the images that we gathered from the Spypoint IR-7. Whether it was day or night, we were able to see animals and objects that were approximately 50 feet away from the camera. The pictures are clear, and although it is hard to determine the specifics of some animals past a certain distance in the photos, we could, for the most part, determine their gender, size and the number of points on their antlers by looking at the photos.

The videos are also high quality. The video resolution is 640 x 480 pixels, and videos are saved as AVI files. The recordings can last up to 90 seconds but can be captured in increments of 10, 30, 60 or 90 seconds depending on the setting you select. Though you don't get HD quality and some areas of the picture are less detailed than others, you will understand what you are looking at and what the camera captured at that point in time.

While the Spypoint IR-7 doesn't have a built-in flash, there really isn't a need for one. With the built-in infrared sensors, you can capture images during the day or at night in any kind of weather. The infrared capability allows you to capture videos or still images of the activity taking place in a specific area without disturbing the animals. Like many other game cameras, the Spypoint IR-7 has a box-like shape. It is a sturdy size and measures 4.5 inches x 6.8 inches x 2.8 inches. You can easily hook it to a tree or place it on a tripod to capture movement while you are not around. A strap that will attach it to a tree is included with the camera; however, you will have to purchase a tripod separately if you choose to set it up that way.

This trail camera comes in a grey or camouflage case. Both cases are designed the same and have the hinge on the left side and will open on the right. The camera fits perfectly inside the case and is easy to put in and take out. There is a seal around the outer edges of the case so that when it closes, you can trust that no water or rain will seep into the case and harm the camera.

This trail camera takes six AA batteries that will give you approximately 90 days or three months of videos and photos. When the camera is in test mode, you will see a graphic displaying the battery level in the bottom right corner of the display screen. This helps determine whether you should change your batteries before using your camera. You can use either Alkaline or Lithium batteries, which is nice because the camera fits users' preferences; however, you will need to make sure to set the camera to either Alkaline or Rechargeable for maximum performance and safety.

Although we didn’t test the solar panel, that is also a power option that is sold separately from the camera. The Spypoint IR-7 has a number of power options that make it more versatile and able to fit more users' preferences. It's easy to switch from option to option, and we found that it offers a fairly long lifespan, which is convenient for hunters and others who spend a great deal of time outdoors.

The camera accepts SD or SDHC memory cards. There is no internal memory, so a memory card is required to use the camera.

The camera will work with memory cards up to 32GB in size, holding approximately 15,000 photos or eight hours of video. Because the camera is triggered by movement, you won’t have to worry about your video footage having empty frames. The design and features of this camera help make the most out of the available memory space.
